Ersilia P. Engebrits
August 26, 1919 - January 10, 2016

William L. Harvey Photo spacer.gif Ersilia Palumbo Engebrits, 96 years old and a 51 year resident of Carlsbad, California went to be with the Lord on January 10, 2016 comfortable at home with family.

She was born in Naples, Italy on August 26, 1919 to Luigi and Adele Palumbo; 1 of 4 children, her parents and siblings preceding her in death. Ersilia was a seamstress by trade, but would later come to be recognized for her delicious Italian meals and generous hospitality. Ersilia met Norman Engebrits in 1944, an American Army GI, Sargent MP stationed in Italy. They married on Ersilia's birthday in 1945 and moved to Seattle, Washington shortly after. After a series of promotions for Norman, he and Ersilia settled in Carlsbad, California in 1965. Norman and Ersilia were involved members of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church throughout their lifetime. They were blessed with three sons, Ernest Louis, Anthony Bruno and John Carmen, and Ersilia excelled at her passion of being a stay-at-home wife and mother; always a welcoming and generous hostess to those that crossed her doorstep. Her beloved Norman preceded Ersilia in death on September 14, 2011.

Ersilia is survived by her sons – Ernest and his wife Sharon, their children, Toni Lynne, Joseph Michael and Nicholas James along with his wife Sara and their 2 daughters, Iris and Pearl; Anthony and his wife Marilyn, their children John Anthony along with his wife Susanne and their children Davis and Adalaide, Jamie Ann and Patrick Hand along with their children Keeva, Lila and Jaxon, Amber Marie along with her son Tyler, Sarah Jane along with her daughter Makayla, and Angela Jean along with her husband Frank Theveny and their children Jacob and Caleb; John Carmen and his wife Kelli and their children Alaina Isabel, Michael Norman along with his wife Caitlin and their daughter Paxtyn, Timothy Richard and Daniel James. In her own words, Ersilia lived a good life including 66 beautiful years of marriage to Norman, 3 sons, 3 daughter-in-law's, 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Ersilia was known for her engaging sense of humor, an always welcoming home accompanied with a host of incredible Neapolitan delights, and her stylish high heels – which she wore into her 96th year. The first word of Italian her grandchildren and great-grandchildren ever learned was 'Bella Nonna,' and she wore that title with grace. Her key to life was her faith in God, and the wisdom she shared to living a long and happy life is to know Him, surround yourself with the people you love and be sure to eat plenty of garlic and enjoy a glass of red wine daily. You can take the girl out of Naples, but you can't take the Neapolitan out of the girl. Saluti! Ching ching! Bracci Tutti!

Ersilia's viewing will be on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 6p at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Carlsbad followed by the Rosary Service at 7p. The funeral service will be Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 930a at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church with the reception immediately following. She will be interned with Norman at the Miramar National Cemetery at 1230p the same day. Rev. William Rowland will be officiating the service and her six grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you kindly donate to the Saint Patrick's Catholic Church capital campaign.
