flag SpacerClayton, Gary Edward ENCINITAS -- Born May 23, 1937, Gary passed away on May 2, 2013 at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., due to complications from a short battle with cancer.

All close family members were with him when he passed away. Gary was the eldest son of Edward John and Martha Barbara Clayton of Homer, Nebr. He grew up there with his brothers and sister before leaving for the University of Nebraska for two years. He then joined the rest of the family in Spring Valley, Calif., where he went to San Diego State and received a degree in Engineering.

He worked for the Navy in San Diego as a Civil Engineer until his retirement. He met his wife, Christine there. They moved to Encinitas, Calif., and enjoyed married bliss for 25 years. Gary enjoyed camping and fishing all over the western United States and Canada, and snorkeling in both oceans with his wife.

He is survived by his wife, Christine of Encinitas; stepson, Christopher Larsen of San Diego, Calif.; brothers, Ivan, Lance, and Reid, all of California; and sister, LuAnn of Washington. There are also nieces, Kelley and Crystal; and nephews Drew and Todd.

Gary desired to be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea. No services were held, but remembrances of his life were held by family members. He will be greatly missed.
